French is a Romanic language originally spoken in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Today about 300 million people around the world have French as either a native or second language with significant populations in 54 countries.
About 7 million Canadians are native French-speakers, of whom 6 million live in Quebec. French is also one of Canada's two official languages (the other being English). French is the third most spoken language in the US after English and Spanish. French is widely spoken in many countries in Africa due to the France's numerous colonies from the past.
French is a descendant of the Latin of the Roman Empire, as are languages such as Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Romanian, and Portuguese. Its development was also influenced by the native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders.
French is an official language in 30 countries, most of which form what is called in French La Francophonie, the community of French-speaking nations. It is an official language of all United Nations agencies and a large number of international organisations.
According to George Weber's point system, French is the second most influential language in the world.
